Ten years ago

‘No!’ I cry. How is this happening?

I roll Leah towards me and cradle her head in my arms. There’s a sticky, wet patch on her head. I think it’s mud. I brush her short blonde hair out of her eyes and I realise it’s blood.

I whimper. The rain is still coming down, pooling all around us. My jumper is already sticking to my skin. I remember reading something about not moving injured people. But if I lay her back on the floor she’ll be soaked through in no time.

‘Leah! Leah!’ I call her name loudly and shake her, trying to wake her up.

It doesn’t work.

‘Leah!’ I give her cheek a gentle slap.

Her eyes flutter and my heart leaps.

I haven’t killed her!

‘Leah,’ I try again, slapping her cheek a little harder now.

Her eyes fly open.

‘It’s OK, it’s OK,’ I say to her.

Leah’s eyes are wide and scared.

‘I don’t know what happened.’

She moans in pain.

‘What hurts?’

‘My head.’

‘Anything else?’

She shakes her head slowly. Her eyes have closed again and there’s more blood oozing from the gash in her head.

I need to do something, fast.
